Christmas Bedding Sets: How to Choose the Best Set (Fabric, Size & Style)

Here's the thing about Christmas decor: one new duvet cover does more than ten small decorations. The bed is the biggest surface in your bedroom, so when it changes, the whole room changes. The hard part is choosing: red or green, plaid or gingham, cotton or microfiber, and which size. We got you.
We lined up every Christmas bedding set in our Christmas Room Decor collection side by side: fabric, sizes, what comes in the box (and what doesn't), plus how to put on a duvet cover without losing your mind, how to wash it and how to style the finished bed. Everything comes straight from the listings, so no guessing.

Christmas Bedding by Style
Red and White Holiday Motifs
Red Bow Christmas Bedding Set is the only set here that goes ALL in on Christmas. Bows, trees, Santas and little holiday details, stitched so they have texture instead of a flat print. It comes in Single, Twin and Queen, and the listing suggests pairing it with the Christmas Tree Glass Table Lamp and keeping the rest of the room simple. Smart.

Red Plaid
Red plaid is the classic that works from Thanksgiving to February and never gets old. Cozy Cottagecore Red Plaid Bedding Set has red checks, scalloped white lace and tiny bears and penguins. Cottagecore Red Plaid Bedding Set keeps the check and lace and adds a flat sheet. Red Tartan Plaid & Black Bedding Set has a solid black duvet with the tartan on the sheet and pillowcases, so the pattern stays in check. And Coquette Red Plaid Ruffle Bedding Set adds a red ruffle and tiny black bows to a red and gray plaid.

Green and Brown Plaid
Going for cabin or dark academia? The Dark Academia Aesthetic Green Plaid Bedding Set is green and red tartan in washed pure cotton, and you can choose plaid, green and red, plaid and green, or plaid and red pillowcases. The Cottagecore Aesthetic Brown Plaid Bedding Set is a brown and green check with similar pillowcase choices, a calmer base you can dress up with red and green accents. The Pastel Green Plaid Cotton Duvet Cover Set is the softest version: a pastel green check in 100% cotton.

Red and White Gingham
The Black & Red Preppy Gingham Bedding Set is a cotton duvet cover set in red and white gingham, with Brown, Pink and Blue versions too. The Red Gingham Plaid Duvet Cover Set is the storybook version: tiny red checks with wide white frills, in Red or Black.

Velvet Bow Sets for Cold Nights
Beige Bow Velvet Duvet Cover and Blue Bow Duvet Cover Set are made of super plush rabbit velvet and fleece, the warmest sets here. The beige one comes with bows and brown "Apple Juice" and blue teddy bear pillow details, and the blue one has bows, pastel stripes and embroidered apple and teddy bear pillowcases. Not Christmas in the strict sense, but they look right at home in a winter bedroom.

Which Fabric Is Best?
There's no single best fabric. It depends on how warm you sleep, how often you wash and what you want to spend. Here's how these ones feel.
| Fabric | What it feels like | Sets |
|---|---|---|
| 100% cotton / cotton | Breathable and soft, a light feel that works in dorms and apartments. | Black & Red Preppy Gingham Bedding Set, Pastel Green Plaid Cotton Duvet Cover Set |
| Washed cotton | A soft, relaxed texture for everyday use. The 32-count sets are described as breathable natural cotton with a softened or lived-in finish. | Dark Academia Aesthetic Green Plaid Bedding Set, Cottagecore Aesthetic Brown Plaid Bedding Set, Coquette Red Plaid Ruffle Bedding Set |
| Microfiber | Smooth, lightweight and easy to wash. | Cozy Cottagecore Red Plaid Bedding Set, Cottagecore Red Plaid Bedding Set, Red Tartan Plaid & Black Bedding Set, Red Gingham Plaid Duvet Cover Set |
| Faux cashmere | Made for colder months, with a thicker feel. | Red Bow Christmas Bedding Set |
| Rabbit velvet / fleece | A plush, warm surface for winter. | Beige Bow Velvet Duvet Cover, Blue Bow Duvet Cover Set |
The short version: cotton for a bed that works all year, microfiber for easy care and a lower price, and faux cashmere or velvet if you want your bed to feel like a giant blanket.
Christmas Bedding Size Guide
Sizes are where most bedding orders go sideways, so look at this before you fall for a pattern. Every set has its own Size menu, and the names aren't identical (Single/Twin on one set, Single and Twin separately on another), so the size table on the listing is your best friend.
Here's what the measurements look like, using the Red Bow Christmas Bedding Set as an example (straight from its product page):
| Size | Pieces | Duvet cover | Flat sheet | Pillowcases |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 3 | 79 x 91 in (200 x 230 cm) | 96 x 98 in (245 x 250 cm) | 1 x 19 x 29 in (48 x 74 cm) |
| Twin | 4 | 79 x 91 in (200 x 230 cm) | 96 x 98 in (245 x 250 cm) | 2 x 19 x 29 in (48 x 74 cm) |
| Queen | 4 | 87 x 94 in (220 x 240 cm) | 96 x 106 in (245 x 270 cm) | 2 x 19 x 29 in (48 x 74 cm) |
Three quick things that save you a headache:
1. Match the cover to your insert. The cover holds your duvet insert or comforter, so compare its dimensions with the label on your insert. Same size or a tiny bit bigger is easiest to fill and won't bunch up.
2. Know your mattress. Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and Cal King are all different. Sets with a Twin XL or Cal King (the Cozy Cottagecore Red Plaid and Red Gingham Plaid sets) are the ones for a longer dorm mattress or a Cal King bed.
3. Pick your sheet style. The green plaid, brown plaid and preppy gingham sets let you choose flat or fitted. Fitted stays put on the mattress, flat gives you the classic layered look.
What Is Included (and What Is Not)
A bedding set isn't a bed in a bag. The listings say the duvet insert isn't included (the Blue Bow listing doesn't say either way, so plan on using your own), so you'll need a comforter or duvet insert to go inside the cover. Pillows aren't included either, only pillowcases.
What changes from set to set: some sets include a flat sheet (the Red Bow, velvet bow, ruffle, lace plaid and tartan sets), some let you choose a flat or fitted sheet (green plaid, brown plaid and preppy gingham), and some are just a cover with 2 pillowcases (the Red Gingham Plaid and Cozy Cottagecore Red Plaid microfiber sets, and the pastel green plaid set, which says "no sheet"). The table above shows each one.
How to Put On a Duvet Cover
Step 1. Turn the cover inside out. Lay it flat on the bed, opening at the foot, inside facing up.
Step 2. Put the insert on top. Lay your duvet insert or comforter over the cover and line up the corners.
Step 3. Tie or tuck the corners. Got corner ties? Tie each one to the insert's loops. If not, grab each corner of the insert through the matching corner of the cover.
Step 4. Flip it right side out. Hold the two top corners, lift and shake the cover down over the insert, like pulling a sock right side out.
Step 5. Close it up and smooth. Fasten the closure at the foot, give it a good shake and smooth it flat. Done!
How to Style a Christmas Bed
Cover's on, now the fun part. A patterned duvet likes calmer layers on top, and a plain one can handle more.
Pillowcases: alternate pattern and plain. The Plaid Christmas Pillowcase comes in Red Green Plaid, Burgundy Red, Forest Green and Chocolate Brown, so it pairs with most of the sets above. Blanket: fold one across the foot of the bed. The Snowy Christmas Fleece Throw Blanket has a flannel face and a sherpa fleece reverse, and the Christmas Stocking Plush Throw Blanket has a striped stocking, snowflake and tree design on a fuzzy surface. Statement pillow: add one, such as the Bow Christmas Tree Pillow or the Pink Bow Christmas Wreath Pillow. Light: finish with a lamp like the Christmas Tree Glass Table Lamp.

How to Wash and Store Christmas Bedding
Check the care label on your own set first. For example, the Red Bow Christmas Bedding Set listing says to machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, wash separately, not use bleach and tumble dry low. The velvet bow sets say to place the bedding in a laundry bag, machine wash cold and skip the bleach.
A few habits make any bedding last longer: wash a new set before you use it, keep dark and bright colors separate the first few times, close zippers and ties first, and don't overload the machine so the cover can move. When January comes, make sure the set is fully dry before folding it and store it in a breathable cotton bag or a closet, not a sealed plastic bin.
FAQ
What is Christmas bedding?
Christmas bedding is a duvet cover set, sheet set or blanket in holiday colors and patterns, such as red and green plaid, gingham, bows and Santa or tree motifs. Many sets use plaid or neutral colors that also work in January.
Does Christmas bedding come with a comforter?
Not the sets in this guide. The listings say the duvet insert or comforter is not included, so the set is a cover plus sheets or pillowcases, and you use your own insert.
What is included in a bedding set?
It depends on the set. Most include a duvet cover and pillowcases. Some also include a flat sheet, and some let you choose a flat or fitted sheet. Pillows and duvet inserts are not included. Always check the Includes line on the product page.
Do bedding sets come with pillows?
No. The sets come with pillowcases only. You need your own pillows.
What is the difference between a duvet cover and a comforter?
A comforter is a thick filled blanket that you use on its own. A duvet cover is a removable cover that protects a duvet insert, so you can wash the cover and change the look of the bed without washing the whole duvet.
Should a duvet cover be bigger than the duvet?
The cover should be about the same size as the insert, or slightly larger. Too small and it will not close, too large and the insert will bunch up inside. Compare the cover's dimensions on the listing with the label on your insert.
Can I use a double duvet cover on a king duvet?
No. A smaller cover will not fit over a larger insert. Match the cover size to the insert size, and check the measurements on the listing.
What size Christmas bedding do I need?
Match the set to your mattress: Single or Twin, Full or Double, Queen, King or Cal King. Sizes vary by set, so check the Size menu and the size guide on the product page.
Which Christmas bedding is the warmest?
The Red Bow set in faux cashmere and the velvet bow sets in rabbit velvet and fleece are the warmest options in this guide. Cotton and microfiber sets are lighter, and what keeps you warm underneath is mainly the insert.
Which Christmas bedding is best for a dorm?
Look for Twin or Twin XL sizing, an easy-care fabric and a pattern you will keep using in January. The microfiber red plaid and gingham sets include a Twin XL size and start at $70.99. For more dorm ideas, see our Christmas dorm decor ideas.
How much does Christmas bedding cost?
In our Christmas collection, sets start at $70.99 for the microfiber duvet cover sets, while the faux cashmere and velvet sets start at $169.99 and $202.99. Price also depends on size. Check the product page for the current price.
How do I wash a duvet cover?
Follow the care label on your set. A common approach is a cold, gentle cycle, no bleach and a low tumble dry, which is what the Red Bow listing recommends. Wash the cover before first use and shake it out when it comes out of the dryer.
When should I put Christmas bedding on?
Whenever you like. Many people change their bedding at the start of December, but red plaid, green plaid and gingham sets work from November through February.
Is Christmas bedding only for December?
Not if you pick the right one. Plaid and gingham look like winter bedding, not just Christmas bedding, so they work all season. Holiday motif sets like the Red Bow set are best kept for the holidays.
Do you have pink Christmas bedding?
Yes. The Coquette Red Plaid Ruffle set comes in a Pink Polka Dot Ruffle version, and our pink Christmas decor guide has more pink sets with bows, ruffles and stripes.
Style first, then size, then the cute extras. You can see every set in the Christmas Room Decor collection.
